As the market for commercial UAVs and drones grows, DJI is growing along with it, maintaining a remarkable market share of 70%. The newly released Phantom 3 Standard (P3S) is the latest addition to the popular Phantom 3 Series, and is accessible to new audiences both thanks to its new features that makes it even more easy to use, and its affordable price of £649. Let’s see how this new aircraft compares to its elder siblings, the Phantom 3 Professional (P3P) and the Phantom 3 Advanced (P3A).
Opening the Box
As the P3S is part of the Phantom 3 Series, the package is similar to that of the other products in the series, and is neatly designed to be a compact package. The box includes the aircraft, one Remote Controller, propellers, a charger, and the user manual. Just mount the propellers to the aircraft and you’re ready to fly! For safety reasons, however, it is recommended that you familiarise yourself with the product’s manual before flying it, and that you avoid flying in No Fly Zones.
A Lighter Version
While the P3S is similar to the other products in the series, one difference is that it does not include the vision positioning technology that the others have. This makes it the aircraft lighter, weighing a total of 1216 grams, and therefore easier to transport and carry.
Upgraded Remote Controller
The Remote Controller that is included with the P3S has been re-designed to be smaller and lighter than the P3P and P3A. As it is a product meant for beginners, the remote has been simplified with fewer buttons, making it easier and more intuitive to use. Unlike with the P3P and P3A, there is no need to use a USB cable to connect the Remote Controller with your mobile device, but communication instead happens via wireless connection. The P3S supports 720p live HD view and is capable of transmitting over a range of 0.6 miles (1 km). An improvement from the Phantom 2 Vision+ (P2V+) is that the newly designed Wi-Fi range extender is integrated with the P3S Remote Controller and that they both share the same battery. This unique design simplifies the use of the controller as you no longer need to charge the two parts independently.
2.7K Video Recording
The highlight of the P3S is its camera, which is capable of shooting 2.7K HD video (2704×1520 pixels), something that is not commonly seen on entry-level drones. In comparison to the other two Phantoms, the P3P is capable of shooting 4K video, while the P3A shoots 1080p. The P3S is equipped with a wide-angle lens with a 94⁰ FOV (Field of View), a large f/2.8 aperture, and takes 12 Megapixel photos, in either JPEG or RAW DNG format, for those who want to preserve the maximum amount of detail in their photos.
When it comes to capturing photos, the performance of the P3S camera is almost the same as the P3P and P3A. When it comes to recording videos, the P3S shoots 2.7K HD video, which is higher quality than the P3A’s 1080p resolution, but lower than the P3P’s 4K resolution.
More Powerful Propulsion System
DJI’s Phantom 3 Standard comes with a completely new propulsion system. From the outside appearance, we can easily see that the motors on the P3S are different than those on the P3P and the P3A. When it comes to navigating the aircraft, the P3S is more responsive and quicker to react to your controls.
The P3S has the same 4S LiPo 4,480mAh battery as the P3P and P3A, but manages a longer flight time of up to 25 minutes, the longest in the series, thanks to its lower weight.
Unique Mobile App
The P3S comes with DJI’s all-new DJI GO app, which is another of its highlights. DJI has constantly been pioneering and adding new functionality to its apps, and with the DJI GO app, the P3S receives new functionality such as Auto-take Off and Auto Landing, Return To Home, live HD video view, and manual shutter control. In the near future, a firmware upgrade will give the P3S more Intelligent Flight functions like Follow Me and Point of Interest.
I believe that after reading this review, you will have been able to see the strengths of the Phantom 3 Standard and its new features and improvements, like the 2.7K HD Video, the lighter weight and the 0.6 miles (1km) transmission distance, and the new, improved propulsion system. The price is also improved at £649, significantly lower than the price of the P2V+ at introduction. The Phantom 3 Standard is ideal if you are looking to buy your first drone.
